ASK THE MXPERTS: PRE-MIX ISN’T DEAD IN THE AGE OF FUEL-INJECTED TWO-STROKES

Dear MXA,

I’m new to two-strokes and couldn’t be happier with my 2023 KTM 250SX. I noticed that  MXA recommended running a 60:1 oil ratio in my fuel-injected KTM’s gasoline. I thought fuel-injected two-strokes mixed the oil and gas internally. I don’t know what 60:1 means. My dealer told me to pour one bottle of Maxima K2 into 5 gallons of gasoline, and that is what I have been doing. How much oil would I have to put in 5 gallons of gas to get a 60:1 ratio?

Every two-stroke rider should own a Ratio-Rite. It allows you to pre-mix fuel in the correct amount whether in cc’s or ounces.

We admit that the majority of two-stroke racers do exactly what you have been doing. They simply pour a 16-ounce bottle of Maxima K2 into 5 gallons of gas to get a 40:1 pre-mix ratio. The problem comes when they try to mix up less than 5 gallons or change their gas/oil ratio. The first thing every neophyte two-stroke rider should do is buy a Ratio Rite measuring cup. It is a durable plastic cup that has measuring marks embossed into the plastic to tell you the correct amount of oil (in ounces or cubic centimeters) for every gallon of gas. It is a must-have. Your local dealer will have one on his shelf, or you can order one from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC for under $8.00.

Until then, we have included a two-stroke pre-mix ratio chart above that will easily tell you how to mix up any pre-mix ratio. The answer you want is that you add 10.67 ounces of Maxima K2 to 5 gallons of gasoline to get 60:1 (40:1 would be 16 ounces of oil). Print this chart out and tape it inside your toolbox lid.
