“SATURDAY AT THE GLEN” RACE REPORT: THE CLOCK IS TICKING… TIME TO GET TO WORK!

The clock may not be ticking at your local track, but at Glen Helen all eyes are focused on the 2022 World Vet Championship on November 4-6. And that is evident by the riders who show up to the weekly practice sessions and at the “Saturday at the Glen” races. This week’s Saturday race saw an influx out of state and foreign riders getting some warm-up laps in. Best of all, next Saturday’s “Saturday at the Glen” race will be held on the actual World Vet track. It is the first chance for riders to race on the complete, very long layout. Shortened version of the World Vet track will be used for the Tuesday, Nov. 1 and  Thursday, Nov. 3 practice days. The complete World Vet track will again be run in its entirety on Nov. 4…and, of course, for the races on Saturday and Sunday, November 5-6.

Brian Medeiros (934) was able to keep his Suzuki RM-Z250 right in the middle of the 450 pack and even recovered from a fall when his buddy, Dennis Stapleton, brake checked him in an uphill rut. Photo: Dan Alamangos

What follow are a selection of photos shot by Debbi Tamietti, Jon Ortner and Dan Alamangos for your pleasure. If you wanted to be in one of the photos you’d have to come to “Saturday at the Glen” and race.

Josh Kaller (15) went 4-3 for third in the 450 Pro class. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Poland’s Arek Kruk (79) looked unbeatable in the first moto of the Over-50 Experts as he rode away to a big win. Photo: Dan Alamangos

But in the second moto Arek got beat by Luther French (21). However, since Luther had a 7th in the first moto, Arek Kruk got the overall win in front of Richard Ellis (3-3) and Pete Murray (2-4). Luther’s 7-1 was good enough for 4th. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Pete Murray (7) doesn’t lose very often, but he was 3rd in the Over-50 Expert class on Saturday. He then came out and swept both motos of the Over-60 Expert class to make amends. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

New Zealander Mark Buxeda (92) chases Australian Dan Alamangos (82) in the Over-50 Expert class. The Kiwi went 9-8 for 8th and the Aussie went 8-10 for 9th. Unfortunately, Dan Alamangos fell off a ladder the next day at work and broke his tib/fib. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Ed Guajardo (27) and Jon Ortner (0) fight for the same space in the Over-60 Expert class.  Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Former New Zealand National Champion Tony Cooksey (6) won the first moto of the Over-65 Expert class, but got beat by former CMC Number one rider Val Tamietti in the second moto. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Here, Tamietti (31) leads Cooksey, wearing Jeremy Seewer’s jersey, as they navigate traffic. That is Will Harper’s scoop tire in front of Tony and Val. Val went 2-1, Tony 1-2 and Will 6-3. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Lars Larsson (171) flew in from Sweden this past week and the first thing he did was head to Glen Helen to prep for the World Vet. Jody Weisel (71) and Lars have raced against each other for decades and picked up exactly where they left off when Lars left the USA to spend the Summer in Sweden. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Jon Ortner (10) raced the Over-50 Experts and the Over-60 Experts. He was 3rd in the Over-60 class and 5th in the  Over-50 Experts. Photo: Dan Alamangos

This MXA test rider stopped and blocked the outside line at the top of this drop-off to protect a fallen MXA rider, who has just picked up his bike after a crash. It just so happens that they are father and son—Randel Fout (left) and Josh Fout (right). Photo: Dan Alamangos

Marc Crosby (42) is leading a Conga Line in the Over-65 Intermediates. Marc would end up third with a 4-3 days. Number 30 was Over-65 Expert Steve Chandler, who drove down from Utah, only to get stuck in the middle of a battle that wasn’t his. Meanwhile, Tim Hoole (40) earned a second place finish with a 3-2 score. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Dirt Bike’s Ron Lawson (66) leads Pete Murray (7), Dave Eropkin (811), Tony Cooksey (6) and Mike Monaghan (34) in the Over-50 Experts. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Randy Skinner (72) went 8-1 for 4th in the Over-60 Intermediates. Note Randy’s scoop tire. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Bill Keefe (46) came out to “Saturday at  the Glen” for the first time. He was 4th in the first Over-60 Intermediate moto, but didn’t do himself any favors with a 10th in moto two. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Bruce Ashmore (111) got the holeshot in the Over-60 Intermediates. Behind him are eventual winner Pete Anagnos (29), Robot Rogers (12), Ernie Becker (83), Tim Hoole (40) and Todd Wiseman (918). Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Geoff Patterson (211) is not popular with the scorers because of his gray-on-black numbers. They score the races with transponders, but still write down every number as they pass the tower in case there is a transponder failure (which is not unusual). Geoff got third in the Over-50 Intermediates. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Corby Reutgen (513) and Scott Murphy (733) are in the middle of the giant sand trap back in the old Budd’s Creek section of the Saturday track. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Denver Ethridge (515) put together a 2-2 day for second overall in the 250 Novice class. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Phillip Marlow (324) swept both motos of the 450 Novice class, while Mason Hibner (15) won the 125 Two-Stroke Intermediate class. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Matt Smith (123) came over from Tucson, Arizona, to go 1-1 in the Over-40 Experts. Photo: Jon Ortner

Shawn Bushnell’s 2-2 gave him second overall in the Over-40 Experts.

Braxtin Mikeown (226) used a 4-2 to get a second overall in the 50cc PW50 class. He has a nice stand-up style. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Mike Monaghan double classed on his 2009 YZ125. He was 11th in the Over-60 Experts, but won the 125 Pro class. However, the “First Place” medallion was a joke that the scorers played on Mike. How So? Mike’s YZ125 quit on the last lap of the second 125 moto and he DNF’ed the moto, but it turned out that every bike in the 125 Pro class failed to finish the second moto and since Mike won the first moto and was the last bike to break down in the second moto—he was the winner.
